This piece started out about 5 months ago as a personal exploration. I wanted to do some shiny vehicles set in a classic environment, like Syd Mead does so well. The progress was really on and off as I tried to find time to work on it, and each time I picked it up I wanted to completely change it. I've posted some of the steps I took below... hope you like it!
This idea came together pretty quickly - I did a basic geometry in XSI and then painted over that. I could easily get sucked in to pushing it further, but it feels good just to get the idea down.
Here's the product of recent late nights... let me know what you think. I like to have story elements even in a matte - makes for a more interesting piece to work on and to view.

Landscape Matte

Hey All!
Ok, so I'd undertaken something I consider a real challenge to do - a matte that is essentially landscape - without props/structures etc. to rely on for compositional devices. I was envisioning an upscale car commercial as I worked on it...
I started with the plate attached, did a sketch over that without any photo reference, but having immersed myself in Hudson River school artists like Bierstadt and Church to gain their insights - pools of light and all. (sketch was two evenings work - one to start it, second to rework it all - anyone else like that?)
Then went looking for reference images:(
Ok, so that adds to the challenge - getting good reference for everything. I'm not sure how many images I have in there ultimately (45+), but it meant a lot of painting with the 1 pixel brushes to get the piece to pull together. (matte working time around 4-5 days now).
It's more of an emotional release than anything too deep. Comments welcome!
